I hold a BS-Agriculture from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, and MS and PhD from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I came to Massey in 2000 after postdocs in the US and Scotland. My expertise is in the effects of feed form and diet composition on nutrient digestion and metabolism. My research explores topics ranging from effect of pelleting on nutrient use and gut development in poultry; impact of gelling agent on feed digestibility in farmed saltwater crocodiles in Papua New Guinea; influence of organic and conventional pasture on milk composition in cows; and amino acid metabolism in domestic cats.

After completing a PhD at Massey University in 2007 she worked as a Research Officer at Estendart Ltd before returning to the University in 2012. Rene joined the Sheep Research Centre as a research officer to work on projects ranging from large flock studies of hogget breeding, to feeding hogget ewes on alternative herbages during lambing to an investigation of ewe longevity. In 2015, Rene took up a lecturing position and in 2018 was promoted to senior lecturer.

I completed my PhD looking at dystocia in beef heifers at Massey University in 2009. I have a BSc (Hons) in Animal Science and Mathematics and a BBS in Finance, also from Massey University. I grew up on a sheep and beef farm near Gisborne and have maintained a strong interest in beef production, particularly breeding cows. Current research interests include beef cow efficiency, making the best use of dairy beef opportunities, and Theileria orientalis (ikeda) impacts in beef herds.

Coming from a farming background, I studied agricultural science at Massey and continued to do a masters in lipid metabolism in sheep and a PhD in lactational physiology. I have a commitment to quality teaching, believing that I am responsible, at least in part, for my students' learning.

My teaching includes organic chemistry, metabolic biochemistry, animal physiology, reprodutive physiology, lactational physiology.

My research involves epigenetic effects on lactation especially in sheep, factors affecting fetal growth and development, and the development of a sheep dairy industry in New Zealand.

I am an Assoc Professor at Massey University teaching and conducting research across disciplines into Veterinary science, Equine science, Agriculture production systems and Sport Science. I obtained my PhD from Massey University in Equine Biomechanics and then was a Huygens Post-Doctoral fellow at Utrecht University, the Netherlands.  After completion of the Post-Doctoral appointment I returned to take up a position at Massey University.

My current research interests have a similar eclectic mix to my teaching.  However, the common theme has been the effect of environmental and training stimuli on tissue development and career length in both racing and sport horses.
