What is it like?

Massey’s Master of Arts (Media Studies) will give you advanced insights into this exciting discipline and prepare you for the future challenges of an information-rich society.

Media studies analyses the production, consumption and content of a range of media including film, social media, television, popular music and smartphones. You’ll explore the formal characteristics of these media and their social, cultural, political and economic implications.

Choose your pathway

This programme offers you the flexibility to pursue a research pathway or a coursework pathway. The research pathway combines taught courses and a substantial research thesis. The coursework pathway is weighted towards taught courses, but requires the completion of a smaller scale research report.

Complete your MA in three semesters

Massey’s Master of Arts is 180 credits. This means you can complete an MA in three semesters of full-time study. If you study part-time, an MA will normally take three years to complete.

Understand and apply media theory and media research

Develop an advanced understanding of the varied conceptual tools needed for analysis and argumentation concerning media texts, forms, processes and practices. You’ll learn how media industries, policy and technology influence the production, distribution and consumption of media.

The MA will teach you to formulate, investigate and assess research questions pertinent to contemporary issues in media studies.

You’ll engage in informed and effective ways with public and professional dialogues and debates in and about media.

Shape the future of the media world

We use media theories as a springboard for exploring and critiquing media and to guide you through the practice of creating your own media products such as short films and documentaries. Your MA thesis can, if you wish, include a practical component orientated towards media production. You’ll be encouraged to use lateral-thinking skills to understand the media world and participate in shaping its future.
