The Master of Management is a professional qualification, designed to increase your business knowledge to help you move up the hierarchy of your career, or make a career change.
Management involves both being able to work independently and make management decisions, but also being able to work with and direct teams of people. Those people could be within your organisation, or external clients and stakeholders. The Master of Management study programme works with you to help develop these skills as well as specialist business capability in your endorsement of choice.
It is a relevant, contemporary qualification, with a unique core of courses that focus on the key business skills of communication, understanding current issues in business and on the fundamentals of the major you have chosen. This gives you a solid platform of knowledge to build on in your particular areas of interest.
There is the ability in some specialisations (endorsements) to complete your study in just one calendar year instead of 18 months. This is available if you study the Master of Management at the Manawatū campus and complete your final course (Part Two) over Summer School. See the planning tab for more information.

“Studying at Massey University has played a huge role in helping me to get to where I am today…”
It helped me learn more about how to lead, put my research into practice in my own life, and taught me a great deal about different types of leadership and leaders.
Massey University was the only university that offered a course of study that integrated the two topics that I was interested in (business and psychology), so I knew that it would be a perfect fit!
I studied business psychology as an undergraduate - I had always been interested in psychology, and my father wanted to make sure I studied something with a practical application, so this was the best of both worlds!
By the time I began my Masters in Communication Management, I was obsessed with the study of leadership and its applications for a variety of sectors and cultures. I felt that this department was a place where I could make a meaningful study of leadership and explore its many facets and applications.
Researching leadership within Māori culture has helped me to understand a powerful model of leadership. The Māori word for leadership is Rangatira, which means “to weave the people together.” It has also taught me how to be sensitive to a diverse set of practices.
Highlights of my career so far are being invited to speak and share my research at a conference at Harvard University and getting approval to speak at Academy of Management - they have somewhere around a 93% rejection rate, so I was honoured to be accepted!
Of course, launching GoodWorld has also been a career highlight. GoodWorld is a social payments company that is fuelling Social Giving, the next wave of seamless, viral charitable payments made with just a hashtag: #donate.
The company started with just myself and a laptop, so it’s incredible to see how we’ve grown. I now have a team of 14 people and over 1600 non-profits signed up for the platform.
In 2016 we were honoured in Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies issue alongside the likes of Facebook and TOMS, won a TIMMY award for being Washington DC’s best start-up and were featured in the Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and Forbes Magazine.
If you would like to progress into a management role, or are interested in progressing into a higher level of management, the Master of Management can facilitate this progression.
International trends are for employers to reward postgraduate study well, especially in larger enterprises. The skills you learn are increasingly recognised as setting you apart from other potential employees.
