Communication is a relatively new field of academic study, and very multidisciplinary in nature.
There are no subject-specific article databases for communication, so the key ones that we recommend are:
Cross searches many relevant databases.
Web of Science
Another multidisciplinary database, very highly regarded.
NOTE: Web of Science and Google Scholar show numbers of citing articles, a powerful way to follow scholarly discussion of a topic.
The famous Internet search engine, restricted to academic material only.
Database Licence Information
Legal guidelines about how and by whom Library-subscribed article databases may be used.
Search Discover to find Library books, journals, DVDs & other material.
Use academic encyclopedias to get an overview of scholarly conversation around a topic.
International Encyclopedia of Communication
The electronic version of a 12-volume print encyclopedia. Very comprehensive.
Encyclopedia of Political Communication
An excellent and comprehensive overview of this aspect of the field.
Encyclopedia of Social Psychology
Aimed at undergraduates and others new to the field, its articles are clear and easy to understand.
Encyclopedia of Communication Theory
Very good coverage of communication and its intersection with other academic disciplines.
Dictionary of Media and Communication Studies
A U.K. publication with detailed entries, and very good on theoretical concepts. It includes a topic guide which lists all entries under 26 major headings, and a chronology.
Oxford Reference Online Premium
A collection of different dictionaries, including definitions of terms from many academic fields.
View recorded television programmes from New Zealand and international channels. Also includes channels in languages other than English.
