Specialise in Lighting for your Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology at Massey
The Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology allows you to update your knowledge and skills in an area similar to that in which you graduated (or work in).
Lighting is a unique specialisation you can focus on. You may already have a degree and are considering specialising in this area, or you are a professional working in a related field and want to upskill. This qualification is ideal for you if you are an engineer, sales rep, product designer, architect, or interior designer.
What will you learn?
You’ll learn the fundamentals of lighting from the basic terms to key design principles, as well as lighting technology. You will have access to Massey’s high-tech facilities where you’ll be able to put some of your knowledge into practice.
Your lecturers are industry experts so they can provide you with not only basic knowledge that is at the cutting edge of lighting but also in specialist areas.
The qualification includes an optional week-long series of immersive workshops in the Massey lab in Auckland.
A Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology in Lighting is a good fit if you:

You will study two courses per year, commencing the first year of study in February with course 218741.

Successful completion of the qualification will provide the academic requirements for membership of the IESANZ.

This course considers photometric concepts and develops the principles of light control and distribution. Human visual processes are considered and colour science is introduced.

This course develops the principles of light production as applied to lamps and considers the application of lamps in lighting design. The requirements for lamp control gear are considered together with the application of optical control to achieve accurate and efficient distribution of luminous flux. Methods of photometric testing of lamps and luminaires will be investigated.

This course develops the principles of interior lighting design. The human requirements and statutory regulations are investigated. Lighting designs are undertaken to demonstrate the techniques involved. The utilisation of daylight to enhance lighting installations and assist with energy savings is considered. Creative lighting techniques are investigated.

This course considers the efficiency of lamps and luminaires in producing and distributing luminous flux. Lighting controls for energy saving applications are investigated. Principles of exterior lighting for work places are considered and the flood lighting of building facades is developed. The design of landscape lighting for commercial and public spaces is undertaken. The statutory requirements for, and the techniques associated with, road way and pedestrian lighting are considered. The design of lighting for sports grounds is undertaken.

Admission to Massey
Specific requirements
To enter the Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology you will have:
- been awarded or qualified for a relevant bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in the area you wish to study, or
- accepted as having equivalent status to a university graduate on the basis of equivalent relevant professional experience.
Other entry requirements
You will also have a background adequate for the courses you wish to study.
You will need to have a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with passing grades in electrical engineering, electronics, physics, or design, or architecture or a related area. Pre-requisites are important but can be waived if you have appropriate industry or professional experience.
You will need to provide copies of all official academic transcripts for studies taken at all universities other than Massey University.
English language requirements
To study this qualification you must meet Massey University's English language standards.
Can't meet the entry requirements?
If you do not have the necessary background for the GCertScTech (Lighting) courses then pre-requisite courses are available in the Certificate in Science and Technology.
