About our internships

Massey Business School provides opportunities for students to gain experience that will help them in their future careers.

We offer the 115389 Business Internship.

This is available in all locations, with the course itself having no scheduled contact classes, as all the work is done on placement with host organisations and associated assignments.

Through these internships you, the student, are hosted by an organisation where you will gain work experience while you're studying. It's a great way of seeing how you can apply your studies and gain contacts who can help you in your career.

Who can do an internship

Internships are offered as part of the Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Accountancy, usually in your final year.

You must meet the prerequisites as outlined on the course information pages.

How the internship course works

An internship usually involves spending a day each week at your host organisation, for 1 semester.

Internships better equip you to understand the value and relevance of your degree study to workplace situations. It can develop your abilities to adapt academic learning to workplace realities and integrate practice and theory. All of these skills will make you more employable, but there is no expectation or guarantee that an internship will lead to a job offer from your host organisation.

Business Internship - 115389 (15 credits)

Provided you meet the course prerequisites, you will need to find a host organisation. They need to provide you with an opportunity to work on a defined project linked to your business degree, ideally your major, and can be completed within either 1 day a week over 12 weeks or approximately 120 hours.

We prefer for you to not be paid for the internship as this places you in an employment relationship rather than a learning focused one.

The host organisation will provide you with a supervisor who can support you during your placement. They sign a formal contract with Massey University once your project has been approved by the course coordinator.

Make sure you have completed this step before the cut-off date (by the last day of November for Semester One internships and by the last day of May for Semester Two internships).

Your supervisor will be asked to complete an online evaluation of your work during the internship at the end of the semester.

If you already work within the organisation or are in full-time work, so cannot be placed in another organisation, you can still do the internship in business. You will need to find a ‘stretch’ project that is not part of your current KPIs and is supervised by someone other than your line manager. This enables us to separate your employment relationship from the learning opportunity that this internship provides.

Hosting an intern

Throughout each year we will have a group of potential interns looking to approach organisations like yours. They will look to discuss possible placements that align with their career goals.

Past hosts have said they found hosting an intern a rewarding experience.

Our students will start seeking placements towards the end of a year for the end of February intake, with subsequent study periods starting mid-July.

Interns often work on a specific project or shadow an industry professional or team during their placement.

Internships usually last between 12 to 15 days, set out as 1 day a week on site throughout semester. The details, tasks and timing of the placement are usually decided between student and workplace before the internship starts.
