Massey's Manawatū halls are fully furnished, offering a range of both catered and self-catered options with shared bathrooms. We recommend that first-year students choose catered accommodation, although self-catered options are available for those with special dietary needs.

Located in Palmerston North – the lower North Island of New Zealand, our Manawatū campus offers students all the services they need and numerous opportunities for outdoor activities. Palmerston North, a small city surrounded by farmland, is just a two-hour drive north of Wellington.

All our accommodation options are fully furnished and intended for single occupancy. We are unable to accommodate couples or families.

Colombo Hall

Colombo's studious community is perfect for students aged 17-23 who prioritise a study/life balance. This alcohol-free catered hall provides fully-furnished bedrooms, shared kitchens and a large common room downstairs for socialising.

McHardy Hall

McHardy Hall, our recently refurbished residence, offers a self-catered environment with spacious, fully-furnished bedrooms, communal lounge and kitchen areas. This vibrant and social community is ideal for students aged 17 to 23.

Egmont Court is a catered and self-catered hall with fully furnished rooms, a communal kitchen and a common room. The apartment-style layout is perfect for students aged 17 to 23 who want to form close friendships while being part of a larger community.

Kairanga and Rotary Courts offer independent living in self-catered units with shared kitchens and bathrooms, ideal for people aged 20 to 35. Build close connections with your flatmates while remaining part of a community.

Kiwitea Hall

Kiwitea Hall is our only catered hall for mature students aged 25 to 35. It features fully furnished rooms, a communal lounge and a small kitchenette in a tranquil bush setting.

If you are living in the catered halls, our meal plan provides you with two meals daily:

  • Monday to Friday – lunch and dinner
  • Saturday and Sunday – brunch and dinner

Dining hall

You will find the dining hall at the Student Centre on the main concourse. The dining hall offers a range of food choices which change daily to keep meals exciting and nutritious. Use your student ID card to receive your meals.

You don't always have to take your meals in the dining hall. If you feel like a takeaway, you can download the Time2Eat app on your device:

You will need to bring some personal items

To help you settle in, create a homey environment and make your stay as comfortable as possible, you should bring:

  • bedding and towels – or you can purchase a bedding pack when you accept your offer.
  • clothing hangers for your wardrobe
  • personal hygiene items
  • laundry basket and powder
  • cleaning products to keep your space tidy
  • electric fan – heaters are provided but you may need a fan in summer.

Occupancy dates

If you are studying the full year at Massey, you must apply for the full year accommodation term. If you are studying for a single semester only, apply for a semester-only accommodation term.

Make sure your application matches the duration of your study programme to secure the appropriate accommodation contract term.

Release of contract

Release of contract If circumstances require you to be released from your accommodation contract at Massey Halls, here's what you need to know.

We understand that circumstances can change, and we're here to support you through the release of contract process if needed.

Eligibility for release

You may be eligible for release from your accommodation contract if you are withdrawing:

  • before the official application withdrawal dates:
    • returning halls residents withdrawing before 1 December 2025
    • new halls residents withdrawing before 23 January 2026.
  • from your studies at Massey University altogether.
  • for compassionate reasons. Applications will be reviewed on a case by case basis and will require supporting evidence.

How to apply for release of contract

  1. Consult with our Assistant Manager – Residential Life before completing the release form if you are withdrawing after the official withdrawal date.
  2. Complete the Release of Contract application form

  3. Submit your completed Release of Contract application form and any supporting documents by email to accommodation.manawatu@massey.ac.nz.
  4. Your application will be reviewed by our Release of Contract Panel, who will make a decision within 7 working days.
  5. Once a decision has been reached, you will be contacted via email to inform you of the outcome.
  6. If your application is approved, all penalties will be calculated from the date we received it.

Payment options

We offer flexible payment options to make managing your accommodation fees as convenient as possible:

  • Full pre-payment – Pay your entire accommodation fees in one payment, either by semester or for the full year.
  • Semester payments – Pay your accommodation fees in two instalments, one prior to the start of each semester.
  • Weekly payments (domestic students only) – Domestic students may choose to pay via direct debit, with an advance payment followed by weekly instalments.

These options are designed to fit different financial needs and preferences, for a smooth and hassle-free payment process.

You will find washing machines and dryers in our laundry facilities – accessible 24/7 at $3 per wash and $3 per dry. Please bring your own washing powder.

Cleaning

Cleaning Maintaining a clean and comfortable living environment is a shared responsibility.

Here’s what you need to know about cleaning.

Catered & Self-Catered Halls

  • Communal spaces – we take care of cleaning the communal areas.
  • Personal rooms – you are responsible for cleaning your own room.
  • After use – you must tidy up after yourself in communal spaces to ensure they remain clean and enjoyable for everyone.

Kairanga & Rotary Courts

  • You are responsible for cleaning your entire living space, including kitchen, bathroom and your own bedroom.

By keeping your living areas clean, you contribute to a pleasant and healthy environment for everyone.

Alcohol

Alcohol You can drink in moderation during permitted times, but you cannot drink in your bedroom. Some types of alcohol are not allowed.

To foster a safe and respectful living environment, we have established the following guidelines regarding alcohol consumption. These policies are in place to promote responsible drinking behaviour and ensure the well-being of all residents. We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to these guidelines.

Where and when you are allowed to drink alcohol

  • Drinking in moderation is allowed 7pm to 11pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
  • You may drink alcohol in designated communal areas only.

Prohibited locations

To maintain a tranquil and orderly living space, drinking in bedrooms is not permitted.

Restricted alcohol types

Spirits and hard liquors are not permitted, as well as alcohol in large quantities such as beer kegs.

Parking and transport

Car parking

If you want to bring your car to university with you, car parking is available for $144 per semester. There are a limited number of parking spaces, so secure your spot early.

You can request a car park when you confirm your Offer of Place. Be sure to indicate your preference during the offer process.

You can't currently apply for halls of residence car parking. Applications will open on 16 January 2026.

Bicycle storage

We support sustainable transportation options like cycling and encourage our residents to embrace eco-friendly transportation options. There are several bicycle racks conveniently located around the Manawatū campus for easy access.

Public transport

You can catch a bus to various destinations across Palmerston North. Students travel free with a Horizons Bee Card, which we provide in your arrival pack.
