Research Expertise

Research Interests

I lead the EpiCentre at Massey University, the largest epidemiology teaching and research group in Australasia. The EpiCentre collaborates on initiatives aimed at enhancing the health and resilience of people, animals, and ecosystems. Our work aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and focuses on developing sustainable and equitable solutions to global health and development challenges.

My research is distinguished by a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder engagement. I excel at the science-policy interface, translating research findings into actionable, practical solutions. Over my career, I have secured over $7 million in research funding and have successfully delivered high-impact projects that have shaped policies worldwide. My contributions have led to revised welfare regulations in New Zealand, enhanced foodborne pathogen surveillance systems in the UK, and bolstered preparedness for equine influenza outbreaks in New Zealand.

In the realm of education, I have developed and delivered training programs that empower professionals to make significant impacts in global human and animal health. I was instrumental in launching a World Bank-funded Master’s program for doctors and veterinarians in Asia, designed to address zoonotic diseases. I have supervised eight PhD students and over 20 Masters students to completion.

In addition, to the formal education pathways I have contributed to Contrnugin Professional Develop. I created and lead the delivery of an Applied Epidemiology Program, funded by the Ministry of Primary Industries, which annually trains 20 professionals from various sectors in New Zealand and abroad. I have also led the creation of self-directed e-modules on outbreak investigation for the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) online training platform. I was active in the Asia-Pacific Consortium of Veterinary Epidemiology (APCOVE), where we collaborate with regional governments and educators to strengthen epidemiological capacity through training and research.

In leadership, I serve as the post-graduate lead for the School of Veterinary Science at Massey University and also lead both the EpiCentre and the Working Dog Centre. Internationally, I lead the WOAH Collaborating Centre in Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health.

In summary, my activities are focused on initiatives that promotes global health and sustainability. I have a proven track record in securing funding and influencing policy, my work spans developing educational programs, leading international collaborations, and translating research into effective policy actions. Through dedicated leadership roles both locally and internationally, I strive to foster advancements in veterinary and public health education, ensuring impactful solutions to worldwide health challenges.
