“This programme is incredibly interesting and has shown me a much wider perspective than I anticipated…”
After working a summer job as a Health and Safety Administrative Assistant, I realised the importance of health and safety as a field, and sought to become a valuable contributor by gaining a tertiary qualification.
I chose to study at Massey University, as it was the only education provider which had the flexible extramural programme, enabling me to continue working whilst studying the Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc).
The BHSc programme covers a wide breadth of content including what health encompasses, what contributes to and causes health outcomes and how health can affect society. From bioscience to public health and environmental health, this programme is incredibly interesting and has shown me a much wider perspective than I anticipated. It also helped me narrow down on the areas which were in my element of interest; occupational and environmental health.
Whilst studying the BHSc, I received a scholarship from Zespri International for my commitment to safer and healthier workplaces. I further took part in a summer internship at the Ministry for Primary Industries, thanks to the Government Health and Safety Lead. Both of which I would never had gained without studying.
This degree has helped me with my future career as the qualification combined with the work experience have boosted my communication skills, time management, and generated a wealth of relevant knowledge to integrate health and safety practices into future workplaces.
The Bachelor of Health Science (Occupational Health and Safety) can lead to or enhance many careers. Our graduates are working as:
“This is the only university programme in New Zealand that prepares students for certification as an OHS professional. It’s also unique because it includes ergonomics - the design of workplaces and jobs that meet human needs while enhancing system performance…”
OHS focuses on preventing injuries and harm to people in their workplaces. But it’s also about creating healthy workplaces so workers have healthy lives. OHS includes ergonomics and human factors. These help to improve business performance.
Studying with us, you will learn why it’s important to establish national standards and regulations, create guidance for businesses and educate and train managers and workers to identify health and safety hazards, and ways to manage and control them so that workers can go to work and arrive home healthy.
