What is it like?

Sustainability has been identified as a key future issue for businesses. This major has been designed to bring together learning around management skills and contemporary issues in sustainability.

Management involves both being able to work independently and make management decisions, but also being able to work with and direct teams of people. Those people could be within your organisation, or external clients and stakeholders. The Master of Management study programme works with you to help develop these skills as well as specialist business capability in your endorsement of choice.

A relevant qualification

It is a relevant, contemporary qualification, with a unique core of courses that focus on the key business skills of communication, understanding current issues in business and on the fundamentals of sustainability. This gives you a solid platform of knowledge to build on in your area of interest.

Areas of focus for this sustainability major include corporate social responsibility, ethics, the carbon-free economy and the UN Sustainable Development Goals and specific management applications such as the ethical behaviour of management within businesses and organisations.

Graduates from the Sustainability major of the Master of Management can look forward being employed in the broad field of sustainability management in the capacity of a manager in or consultant to business, central government, local government, NGOs etc. Representative entry/intermediate level position titles would be: Graduate Sustainability Analyst, Sustainability Advisor, Sustainability Programme Coordinator, Associate Sustainability Consultant, Environmental Advisor, Sustainability and Risk Management Advisor. These positions could be expected to offer career progression to senior positions as Sustainability / CSR Managers.

A 2017 Ministry of Education publication The post-study earnings and destinations of young domestic graduates, found that in New Zealand:

  • Young master’s graduates earn more than one and a half times more than the national median (five years after study)
  • Earnings and employment rates increase with the level of qualification completed
  • Five years after completion, the median earnings of young master’s graduates are 15% higher than for those with a bachelor’s degree.
