What we do
The Farmed Landscapes Research Centre has existed since 1983 to provide practical solutions to the challenges of primary production sectors in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Our research centre does this by sharing information between science, industry, policy and regulatory bodies involved in our primary sectors.
We offer professional development courses, conferences and published works to inform solutions to the big issues facing our primary producers.
We also offer a comprehensive analytical service for soil, plant, water (including effluent) and fertiliser materials.
Our objectives
- To provide practical solutions to problems and issues in the primary production sectors of New Zealand.
- To provide mechanisms for information transfer between science, industry, policy and regulatory bodies concerned with primary production.
Professional development, short courses and microcredentials
The Farmed Landscapes Research Centre offers a range of short courses and professional development programmes.
This course will cover nutrient cycling, water movement, sustainable farm practices and nutrient budgeting.
This course will cover nutrient management, recent research and nutrient budgeting issues. You'll develop nutrient management plans that meet production goals for actual farm enterprises.
Farm Dairy Effluent: System Design and Management
This course focuses on the design, management and auditing of farm dairy effluent (FDE) systems.
This course focuses on understanding greenhouse gas emissions from pastoral production systems and includes how to reduce and mitigate emissions.
Intermediate Freshwater Farm Planning
This course is designed for industry professionals interested in upskilling in the concepts and components important for the development of farm environment plans for freshwater.
Advanced Freshwater Farm Planning
This advanced course provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to produce New Zealand industry-standard, farm-scale, freshwater farm environment plans for dairy, beef, sheep and arable farms.
Analysis of New Zealand Agricultural Systems
This course will introduce participants to the scale and operation of agriculture and its importance within New Zealand.
Understanding Herbicides
This course will give participants a good grounding in the principles of using herbicides to control weeds.
Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment
This course will introduce you to life cycle thinking as a concept and Life Cycle Assessment as an analytical tool to support environmental management.
Advanced Seed Quality
This course will focus on post-harvest seed quality, where and why loss of seed quality can occur, how to assess seed quality and technologies that can be used to enhance seed quality.
Research projects
FLRC's scientists and researchers work closely with industry, government bodies and individuals and is able to conduct novel research, undertake product evaluations, analyse soil, plant and water samples and investigate specific issues in the primary production sectors.
With a greater understanding of nutrient cycling in the soil-plant-animal system, we can recommend strategies that reduce nutrient-loss and improve the efficiency of fertiliser and lime use.
To discuss a research opportunity with FLRC, email Chris Anderson: C.W.N.Anderson@massey.ac.nz.
Analytical and research facilities
Massey's School of Agriculture and Environment has access to modern, well-equipped analytical laboratories for teaching, research and extension activity. We also have access to agricultural land, field equipment and controlled glasshouses.
FLRC adheres to Total Quality Management Systems in the laboratories and is a member of the Australasian Soil and Plant Analysis Council (ASPAC).
Clients and visitors are welcome to meet with staff and view our facilities at the Manawatū campus in Palmerston North.
