Associate Professor Ranvir Singh MTech, PhD

Associate Professor in Environmental Hydrology and Soil Science

Doctoral Supervisor
School of Agriculture and Environment

I define myself as an environmental hydrologist, with specific expertise in the subject area of catchment hydrology, water quality, irrigation and agricultural drainage systems, and water productivity and footprinting sciences. I specialize in integration of field observations, geographical information and hydrological models to study water use, attenuation of nutrient runoff and leaching from agricultural soils, and surface water and groundwater hydrology in rural and peri-urban landscapes.

Key focuses of my research are on advancing water productivity and footprinting sciences by developing new observations, methods and models for both local and global contexts, and advancing water quality science by discovering spatially variable nitrogen attenuation pathways to reduce the flow of ‘nitrate’ contamination from farms to receiving waters in agricultural landscapes. I make an effective use of my research findings and work experiences for water sciences in diverse landscapes in different parts of the world (India, The Netherlands, Iowa (USA), Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Indonesia).

Research Expertise

Research Interests

In particular, I am interested in conducting and supervising research in the:

- Application and advancement of water productivity and footprinting science and methods to assess and improve water use and its management;

- Advances in irrigation and drainage in agricultural systems;

- Identifying processes and pathways capable of attenuating environmentally sensitive elements such as nitrate moving from agricultural soils to surface and groundwater bodies;

- Monitoring and modelling of water and solute transport through unsaturated and saturated zones; and

- Integration of hydrological modelling with field observations, geographical and remote sensing information for field- to catchment-scale analysis of land and water management practices.
