Property – Bachelor of Business

If you study full-time, you will usually complete 120 credits per year (four 15-credit courses in each of Semesters 1 and 2).

If you study part-time, you should consider how many hours per week you can allocate to your studies.  We recommend that part-time students enrol in 30 credits (two 15-credit courses each semester).

Degree structure

The Bachelor of Business (Property) consists of:

• Compulsory (Core) courses (135 credits)
• Property major courses (120 credits)
• Elective courses (105 credits)               

You may use your elective courses to complete a recognised minor, or broaden your study.

Important planning notes

• A full-time study load is typically 60 credits per semester.
• Complete prerequisite courses early to support progression into the higher-level Property courses.
• Some advanced courses may only be offered once per year, so plan ahead.
• If you intend to complete a minor or an internship, you should plan your course sequencing carefully to ensure prerequisite requirements are met on time.
• Some courses may also be available during Summer School.

You must also ensure that your overall degree includes:

• no more than 180 credits at 100 level (including all compulsory and major 100-level course requirements), and
• at least 75 credits at 300 level.

Majors and minors

Completing at least one major is compulsory. A major requires 120 credits, including at least 60 credits at 300 level.

If you wish to complete an internship, it will normally be in addition to your major requirements.

Completing a minor is optional and allows you to broaden your knowledge and capabilities in another subject area. A minor must be in a different subject from your major and can be from another undergraduate degree (subject to the regulations of that qualification).

Meeting requirements for industry membership

Registered Valuer with the Valuers Registration Board (VRB) of New Zealand

If you intend to apply to the Valuers Registration Board for registration as a valuer you need to include the courses in the table below in your study plan. Please note that they are subject to change periodically.

New Zealand Institute of Valuers (NZIV)

The NZIV and the Valuers Registration Board’s course requirements are the same. The NZIV offers a pathway for students and graduates to enter the valuation profession.

Licensee by the Real Estate Agency (REA)

The BBus in Property, when coupled with any assessment required by SKILLS ITO, meets the licensing requirements under Real Estate Agents Licensing Regulations 2009.

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) - Member

If you intend to apply for membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) the BBus (Property) Major is a fully accredited qualification.

Real Estate Institute of New Zealand - Associate

If you wish to apply to become an associate of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (AREINZ) when you complete your degree, you need to take the courses indicated below as part of your Bachelor of Business (Property).

Member of Property Institute of New Zealand (PINZ)

The Property Institute of New Zealand recognises a number of Massey University qualifications for entry to Member status or for registration within PINZ streams.

2026 tuition fees

• Domestic students: $7,415
• International students: $38,080

Tuition fees are estimates only. The exact fees charged will depend on which courses you select at the time of enrolment. The estimates are for full-time study (120 credits). Fees are in New Zealand dollars and include Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The estimates do not include the Student Services Fee. This fee is $1,164 for on-campus students and $948 for distance students for full-time study (120 credits). For more information about this fee and other fees you may need to pay, see non-tuition fees.

• Private practice firms involved in property and development consultancy, project management and coordination, and property management
• Valuation firms
• Commercial and industrial enterprises which use, occupy, or own all types of property

You can also apply for jobs in related areas such as insurance or finance companies, government organisations, local and regional authorities or shopping centres.

Depending on ultimate choice of careers, Property Institute of New Zealand (PINZ), The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ), and the Valuers Registration Board (VRB) are the professional organisations that you are most likely to join as a graduate of this qualification. Each professional body is closely involved with the development of Massey's courses. The institutes actively encourage students to get involved in the affairs of the local branch and, upon graduation, to become members of one or more of these organisations.

What are the specialisations?

Property valuation

Property valuations are required as the basis for a wide variety of real estate decisions. You can meet the requirements for accreditation by the Valuers Registration Board by including specific courses as electives.

Property development and management

Property development involves planning the purchase, development, and sale of new or existing properties.

Property finance and investment

Evaluating a property financing decision requires assessing lending risks and understanding how interest rates are determined.

Property market principles and economics

Property market principles and economics knowledge is required to discuss how uses of property resources are economically determined and developed within shared urban space.
