The Bachelor of Screen Arts (Honours) Animation major builds on the core three-year degree, offering an additional year of advanced practice, industry engagement and research opportunities.
You’ll extend your professional animation skills with opportunities for industry internships and specialised skills development. You’ll also undertake research-led creative projects that explore animation as an art form, industry practice, or pathway for innovation – whether that’s deepening your technical expertise, refining your storytelling craft, or developing soft skills to support your future employment or independent practice.
This additional year provides a flexible space to focus on your personal creative direction while engaging critically with contemporary developments in animation and screen industries.

Honours students continue to access world-class facilities, including motion capture studios, a virtual production volume, industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya, Lost Marble Moho Pro, Adobe Substance Painter & Designer, Pixologic ZBrush, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, and more – supporting both practical production and creative research.

About this major
The Animation major in the Bachelor of Screen Arts with Honours consists of 180 credits.
Minors

2026 tuition fees
- Domestic students: $9,957
- International students: $45,580
Tuition fees are estimates only. The exact fees charged will depend on which courses you select at the time of enrolment. The estimates are for full-time study (120 credits). Fees are in New Zealand dollars and include Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The estimates do not include the Student Services Fee. This fee is $1,164 for on-campus students and $948 for distance students for full-time study (120 credits). For more information about this fee and other fees you may need to pay, see non-tuition fees.
There may also be charges for things such as study resources, software, trips and contact workshops.
