Graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing at Massey University are dynamic, adaptable and critical thinkers. Our student learn innovative approaches that will drive the future of nursing. If you are caring, compassionate and committed to wanting a professional career that can take you all over the world, then consider becoming a nurse.
When you study nursing at Massey, you will be part of a proud programme renowned nationally and internationally for its first-class nursing curriculum and for educating nursing students to contribute to a wide range of healthcare workplaces. Our degree is so highly respected and recognised that both New Zealand and overseas employers hire most of our graduates within six months of finishing our three-year nursing programme.
So why not join the hundreds of Massey nursing students gaining real work experience in hospitals, community health centres, rural and outreach clinics and mental health services throughout the country every year? Why not learn valuable new skills to ensure your success when you go to work in the real world?
The Bachelor of Nursing programme includes science and social science courses related to health, integrated into nursing knowledge. Clinical learning takes place in many different areas including surgical, emergency, medical, mental health and primary care services.
To prepare you for clinical practice, we have nursing simulation suites on our Auckland, Manawatū, and Wellington campuses. Each suite is different, but most have a mock hospital setting, two-way observation spaces, and standard nursing equipment for hospital and community work. You will learn and practice nursing skills through role-play, case-studies and simulations using manikins.
One of the most important aspects of nursing is empathy, but it's not always easy to understand the impacts of long-term illness or ageing, when you're fit and healthy. You will participate in Empathy Labs by wearing special suits that simulate what it's like to attempt normal daily tasks after suffering a stroke, or being restricted by declining health.
Isn’t it good to know that our high-quality degree provides the theoretical and practical knowledge required to work as a registered nurse? As our student, you will be well supported by clinical teachers who are themselves experienced registered nurses.
“Being in a privileged position to help individuals in need and knowing that I am making a difference to people’s lives is such a rewarding thing as a nurse…”
Massey has prepared me to be career-ready in any branch of nursing I could have decided on. And while it is a degree renowned nationally and recognised overseas, I still got to enjoy the ‘Uni experience’ and made long-life friends.
Massey University goes beyond the requirements to be a nurse and has prepared me to be successful in any path I choose to follow. Their curriculum covers topics from pathophysiology of human body function and diseases, communication and therapeutic skills, research and academic writing to assessment and decision-making skills. These are all taught by highly qualified nursing lecturers, many of whom have their PhDs.
Massey taught me how to use evidence-based practice within my own nursing practice, enabling good quality outcomes for all my patients. Along with these valuable new skills, Massey has taught me to be a critical thinker and adaptable which are recognised and valued by employers.
One of the best things about this programme was the variety of hands-on placements. This developed my confidence as a nurse but also allowed to me to find my true niche in nursing, which is surgical nursing.
While Massey is a large University, support is available on an individual basis as well. After discussing with my lecturers, I was given the opportunity to complete my final placement at Taranaki and as a result, I landed a Nursing Entry to Practice (NETP) position there.
Being in a privileged position to help individuals in need and knowing that I am making a difference to people’s lives is such a rewarding thing as a nurse. Having such a valued and recognised degree, I know I will be successful in any path I choose to follow.
Nursing is one of the most rewarding careers, as it is focused on supporting people, families and communities to manage a wide range of health challenges. Nurses are involved in all areas of health care and can choose to specialise in particular areas, such as intensive care, community mental health, aged care, or child and adolescent nursing. They can also become a specialist in particular conditions, such as diabetes, respiratory care or cancer nursing. Nurses can also choose to develop careers in health management, research and teaching.
Many of our Bachelor of Nursing graduates continue with their studies after qualifying as registered nurses by undertaking a master’s degree in nursing. A number of our Master of Nursing graduates have successfully gained registration as nurse practitioners with prescribing rights. We can also offer you a PhD in nursing.
In these challenging economic times, it’s good to know that as a Massey nursing graduate you’ll be highly valued and workplace-ready for a wide range of health-care settings. Here are just a few examples of where you can work:
"I was fortunate enough to be able to secure a job in the Nursing Entry to Practice (NETP) programme working in the operating theatre - an area that I am passionate about. Thanks to Massey I feel prepared, confident and excited about starting work as a Registered Nurse."
"Completing this degree is such a rewarding experience. It has provided the fundamental knowledge, attributes and skills and given me the opportunity to pursue a career in mental health with Capital and Coast District Health Board in the Nursing Entry to Specialist Practice (NESP) graduate programme."
