Philippa Isom

Lecturer

Institute of Education

After completing a Bachelor of Education and Diploma of Teaching (Primary) at the University of Auckland, I began my career in education as a Year 5 classroom teacher before moving on to a role as a Primary Specialist Science and Technology Teacher. After taking time away from the classroom to have a family, I returned to teaching as a specialist Art teacher for Year 7 and 8 where I developed a passion for this age group and progressed to be Team Leader in an area school. From here I moved into educational game development for several years, honing skills in iterative design and cross-sector collaboration. An opportunity arose for me to contract for a tertiary provider for Initial Teaching Education (specifically in the areas of Science and Technology Education and The Innovative Classroom). This became a full-time role adding Literacy Education to the suite of courses I developed and taught including online offerings and co-ordinating the Bachelor of Education students. I joined the team at Massey University late in 2019 based at the Albany campus in Auckland. In 2019 I also completed a Master of Educational Leadership (first class honours) and am now a PhD condidate.

I am a lecturer for Initial Teacher Education with a special interest in the Philosophy of Education, Equity in Education, and Futures Studies. I am passionate about connection across the Learning Areas, student-centered learning, and te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership.
