Shelley's research interests include the nature and experience of exile; censorship and historical silencing, particularly in relation to apartheid South Africa; postcolonial literature; media literacy; communication practices; and representations such as age, gender, sexuality and ethnicity in media and advertising.

Dr Dixon has provided teaching services and support for a number of tertiary institutions and across a number of related fields, including literature, media, and communication studies.

Currently, Dr Dixon provides distance support and marking services for several papers in the undergraduate programme at the School of English & Media Studies. Papers vary from year to year, but typically include: 139.210 (Rewriting Classic Fiction), 139.305 (Twentieth Century Literature), 139.352 (Postcolonial Literature) and 139.361 (Literature of Women).
