Laura O'Sullivan BA, MA, AFHEA

Assistant Lecturer

School of Psychology

I am an Assistant Lecturer and PhD candidate in the School of Psychology at Massey University in Aotearoa New Zealand.

As individuals approach the end of their lives, they, along with their families, friends, and even healthcare professionals, have reported inexplicable and extraordinary phenomena. These occurrences, often perceived to be spiritual or paranormal, include a range of experiences collectively referred to as ‘end-of-life experiences’ in academic circles. These encounters often manifest as vivid dreams or visions, a sense that someone has died, and witnessing events or phenomena that do not seem to happen by chance. Often described as profoundly meaningful, they provide comfort, peace, and hope to those involved. By exploring these experiences, my aim is to gain a deeper understanding of their effects on the grieving process for bereaved loved ones. My PhD research focuses on exploring end-of-life experiences within the unique context of Aotearoa New Zealand, and how these experiences can influence the processes of grief and bereavement for loved ones

Previously researched topics include spiritual intelligence, near-death experiences, and sleep and dreaming experiences (including sleep paralysis, pre-cognitive dreams, lucid dreaming, and out-of-body experiences).
