With an increase in the number of drugs available to treat pain in veterinary patients, the use of combinations of drugs, also known as multimodal analgesia, is gaining popularity. However, there is a gap in knowledge about the drug interactions and any alteration in the metabolism and efficacy of individual drugs when used in combination. Mr Karna proposed and evaluated the efficacy and safety of a multimodal analgesia protocol using combinations of morphine, dexmedetomidine and maropitant to treat pain in dogs. He found that the combination of morphine and dexmedetomidine showed superior efficacy compared to morphine alone at a higher dose and appeared to be the most effective combination among other combinations of morphine, dexmedetomidine and maropitant. All combinations were found safe for their use in clinical practice.
