Globalisation in the Malaysian context: The experience of Malay adolescents with 'conduct disorders'

Globalisation has presented immense challenges where the incommensurability of values potentially affects the locally defined well-being among Malay adolescents. Utilising interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), Mr Daud's research explored the experience of Malay adolescents who are considered to experience 'conduct disorders', within the Malaysian context of globalisation. He sought to understand how appropriate and relevant it is to frame these young Malays' experiences of offending through the framework of Western 'conduct disorders'. His analysis indicates that how the experiences and understanding of the Malay adolescents are constructed reflects the changes in the dynamics of all segments of life alongside the emerging new lifestyles that are embedded in the processes of globalisation. Analysis also suggested that the Malay adolescents who participated in the research simply reacted to the changing context. Therefore, rather than being considered 'disordered', the adolescents' experiences of offending can be understood as responding to the conflicting conditions they face.
