Thesis Title
Aspects of Herbicide Resistance in Three New Zealand Weed Species

Read article at Massey Research Online: MRO icon

Glyphosate and dicamba are two important herbicides used in New Zealand agriculture.  Mr Ghani Zadeh studied several aspects of glyphosate resistance in ryegrass from Marlborough vineyards and dicamba resistancve in fathen from Waikato maize fields.  He quantified the level of resistance in these weed species then developed quick tests for detecting their resistance.  He determined the mechanisms of glyphosate resistance in this ryegrass, and showed that the glyphosate resistance gene can spread via pollen.  Other findings from his research concluded that the glyphosate-resistance mechanism is temperature dependant so will disappear under cool temperatures typical of winter.  Glyphosate-resistant ryegrass populations were all resistant to glufosinate and some were also resistant to amitrole; the two main alternative herbicides to glyphosate used in vieyards.  Mr Ghani Zadeh''sresearch provides useful insights into the management of herbicide resistance in New Zealand.
