Development of social-emotional skills during adolescence is important for mental health and may be influenced by interactions within social environments such as schools. Ms Edwards examined students’ perceptions of teachers’ social-emotional practices and how they were related to students’ strengths and difficulties. She created a conceptual map of social-emotional practices from students’ perspectives, which was used as a lens to analyse 335 survey data collected from students. Ms Edwards found students frequently perceived teachers’ use of social-emotional practices. There were positive correlations between perceptions of social-emotional practices and students’ connectedness, which in turn was associated with fewer social-emotional difficulties.
