Thesis Title
The Context and Enactment of Faith-based Social Entrepreneurship

Religious organisations have met human need and contributed to positive social change for centuries. However, a lack of empirical research into the nature of faith-based social entrepreneurship limits knowledge and theory development, and hinders the effectiveness of faith-based initiatives. Mr Borquist investigated how a religious worldview intersects with values, gender, and institutional logics. He compared case studies of eight faith-based, faith-inspired, and secular organisations engaged in social entrepreneurial activity in the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. His study reveals that social entrepreneurship is based on the same values and principles that are at the heart of Christianity and many other world religions. Gender and religious worldview contexts emphasise that prosocial values, altruistic love, and selfless giving are central to the practice of social entrepreneurship.
