Thesis Title
What Do Mindfulness Scales Measure? Expectation Effects Examined

The increasing popularity of mindfulness practices has seen an accompanying growth in research. However, most past research has focused on the beneficial aspects of practicing mindfulness, usually without comparison to a control group, meaning that the results may not be real effects. Ms Ghanbari aimed to see whether there were expectancy effects for mindfulness practice by designing two different studies, and recruiting 120 participants across three different groups (the passive control, active control, and experimental groups). A before and after test design was employed. The results confirmed expectancy effects (expecting a given result) for mindfulness as compared to the control conditions. Therefore, Ms Ghanbari suggested that researchers need to be cautious in evaluating self-reports of mindfulness practice due to expectancy effects.
