Youth play a key role in Maori language revival efforts. Ms Poutu''sresearch looked at the influences on Maori language use among youth in wharekura (Maori-medium secondary schools). Her research contributes to the growing body of post-graduate academic work written in Maori and is among the first that focusses on the new generation of Maori language speakers. A Maori research method included a national online survey of 478 current and former wharekura students and interviews with 51 members from seven wharekura in the lower North Island region. Key influences highlighted in her research include the role of family members, relationships with teachers and peers, the unique nature of Maori-medium schools and the complex and multi-faceted world in which wharekura youth live in today. Ms Poutu’s research provides important insights for educators, parents and practitioners involved in Maori language revival efforts.
