Ms Calvert examined the psychological effects of Christians’ experience of their relationship with God. She found that the experience of a close and secure relationship predicted improved wellbeing while fears of abandonment and rejection by God predicted reduced wellbeing over time. Ms Calvert’s findings highlight the implications of a relationship with God for mental health – as a potential source of both struggle and strength – and suggest the importance of attending to this issue in therapy with Christian clients.
