Dr Shareef’s research developed a distance education model for the remote islands of the Maldives . Being one of the least developed countries in the world, the Maldives has enormous barriers in infrastructure development, leading to a lack of secondary schools within the islands. At present only 51% of students have access to a secondary school, with only 2% having access to high schools. Dr Shareef has developed a model that will provide access to secondary education to all the students in the islands. His research focused on capitalising on the existing infrastructure in the Maldives and developing a model that does not require additional infrastructure investment. His model uses a CD-ROM/Internet hybrid model without requiring online connections from students. This is a novel approach in the field of distance education, especially in the Maldives
