Mr Fan''sresearch focused on the development of a real time facial expression analysis system, with the goal of improving the way that computers interact with people in their everyday lives. A key component of improving human-computer interactions is a computer system which can understand and react appropriately to natural human behavior. Mr Fan’s research has shown that it is possible to detect human emotions from facial expressions, which can then be used to assist the computer to respond and interact appropriately. Mr Fan developed several algorithms, including novel methods for object classification using Radon transformation with discrete cosine transform. He proposed a new method for size and rotation unrelated real time face detection using a combination of Fourier transformation and template matching. The methods developed through Mr Fan’s research can also be used for detection of objects other than the human face and have potential applications in a range of fields, including the early detection of cancer cells.
