VERTIPTH: A visual environment for real-time image processing on hardware

Mr Johnston investigated how to efficiently implement image processing algorithms on to Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The research examined how to map algorithms to make use of the parallelism available on FPGAs, resulting in a number of novel implementations of image processing algorithms. The resulting mapping process was analysed and used to produce requirements for a high level visual language (VERTIPH) to aid developers in the design of image processing algorithms on FPGAs. Key parts of the language were implemented and evaluated. A user evaluation of VERTIPH was undertaken with positive feedback on its usefulness for developing algorithms, both for image and signal processing on FPGAs.
