Freshwater of good quality and in sufficient quantity is not only fundamental to New Zealand’s economy, it is fundamental to all life. Ms Schiele’s research explored how the voice of Maori is heard in collaborative multi-stakeholder approaches to freshwater management. The research was based on one case study in the Manawatu River Catchment. It culminated in a ‘framework for voice’ to facilitate a deeper level of understanding in cross-cultural collaborations involving Maori and non-Maori. The framework combines the understanding of the different voices, including that of the river, in the context of worldviews and cultural values. It also discusses the short-term to long-term tension in the process of influencing thought and creating new solutions at the interface between cultures.
