Avian influenza remains a major threat to the human and animal populations in Vietnam. To better manage the disease, it is critical to better understand the epidemiology and to have a good tool available to manage information and data about the disease. Mr Nguyen Van Long developed a decision support system for animal health in Viet Nam that can be used for animal health data collection, storage and analyses. Mr Long also carried out a prospective cohort study of avian influenza in poultry in the Mekong River Delta. The study estimated the prevalence and incidence rate of avian influenza viruses as well as quantifying risk factors associated with avian influenza virus infection. It should be stressed that the methodological techniques that have been used in this thesis can be applied to a wide range of animal health issues, not just avian influenza.
