Making happy,healthy, helpful citizens :The New Zealand Scouting and Guiding movements as promulgators of active citizenship, c.1908-1980

This thesis examines the Scouting and Guiding movements in New Zealand between 1940 and 1980, and argues that both movements focused on developing citizenship among young New Zealanders. The movements encompassed a wide cross-section of New Zealand society and received considerable support and assistance from local communities and central government. Although the focus on citizenship remained constant the thesis argues that the movements were influenced by wider changes in society that affected membership and programme content. Throughout, the Scouting and Guiding movements were cognisant that they were working for their youthful members and aimed to combine citizenship training with fun.
