Oils produced by microalgae are useful in diverse applications including potential fuels, food and cosmetic colorants, and pharmaceuticals. Mr Chatsungnoen investigated rapid and inexpensive recovery methods of the microalgal biomass from water by flocculation-sedimentation. The effects of algal cell morphology, biomass concentration in the culture broth, the nature of the flocculant, and the salinity of the culture medium, were all quantified against the efficacy of flocculation-sedimentation. A continuous flow process for flocculation-sedimentation of a marine microalga was developed and a new scheme of solvent extraction of the oils from the wet biomass paste of the algae was established.
