The deaf community makes up a sizable proportion of our society and sign language is their only medium of communication. The communication between deaf and the hearing communities entail a number of challenges which the technology has just recently begun to target. A lot of effort has been made by the researchers on devising and optimising automatic sign-to-speech interpreters. The existing systems have, however, restrictive functionality hence could not be materialised into a practical interpreter for public places (hospitals, courts, malls etc.). Mr Khan''sresearch has developed robust solutions for sign acquisition and identified critical factors (segmentation) for accurate recognition. Unlike all the existing approaches, his novel techniques are not limited only to restricted environments such as laboratories. This means that his findings have turned the dream of developing a practical sign language interpreter into a reality.
