Mr Sharma examined the effects of uterine environment upon embryonic, fetal, neonatal and post-natal development as well as glucose metabolism in sheep. He developed methods to collect and morphologically evaluate peri-implantation embryos and their trophoblasts. He found that a restricted uterine environment impaired embryonic, fetal, and neonatal development of lambs with the effects remaining consistent during subsequent post-natal age of up to at least one year. A luxurious uterine environment had no effect on the development of the lambs, and it improved their glucose metabolism within the first year of birth. This study is a first in showing the importance of the early embryonic period in the development of lambs and indicated significant biological and economical implications of the uterine environment in sheep production.
