Picoraviruses are small RNA viruses that are responsible for polio, foot-and-mouth disease, hepatitis A and the common cold. In my PhD project I was able to use Nuclear Magnetic Resonance to study how these viruses replicate. We were able to determine which parts of a key viral protein and a viral RNA interact, and to effectively visualise their interaction complex. Together with our collaborators, we’ve provided the first detailed insight into the picornaviral replication complex, and hope that the information can be used in the future to combat the associated diseases.
