Ms Jankovic''sresearch describes a new method of capturing the secretome, a collection of genes encoding bacterial proteins that mediate interactions with the environment. The efficiency of this method was demonstrated on a single organism, the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001, resulting in the identification of 89 new secretome proteins. Seven of these proteins were unique to this New Zealand probiotic strain. Ms Jankovic has experimentally determined a probiotic function for one of these proteins. Beyond the field of probiotics, Ms Jankovic''sapproach provides a simple and affordable method to identify potentially useful enzymes, vaccine candidates or virulence factors.
