In the dairy industry, the milk sugar lactose is crystallized as a by-product from the cheese making process. Inhaler grade lactose is commonly used as a drug carrier in asthma inhalers. Mr Shaffer’s research focused on alternative production techniques for producing inhaler grade lactose directly from crystallization without additional post-crystallization processing steps, such as sieving or milling, which currently occurs. A novel crystallization technique was invented, modelled and subsequently built to produce lactose crystals that could be directly used for inhaler grade lactose.
