Thesis Title
Students' experiences and perceptions of relationships in their first year of study.

When beginning tertiary study, students experience a wide range of sometimes challenging relationships with lecturers, peers, and the institution. The literature suggests, however, that relationship success and satisfaction can play a large role in furthering their academic success. Mr Marsh used surveys and interviews at a faculty of education to investigate student experiences and perceptions of the relationships they encountered in their first year of study. Mr Marsh found there exists a complex ecology of student needs, which should be understood and addressed in different ways. Implications of the findings are that stakeholders in higher education need to ensure the building of positive, supportive, learning relationships with their students. It is from the firm base of these relationships that successful learning will flow.
