Ms Meynier investigated the diet of the New Zealand sea lion using stomach content analysis, qualitative fatty acid analysis, and quantitative fatty acid signature analysis between the years 1997 to 2006. The main prey of New Zealand sea lions breeding at the Auckland Islands (New Zealand subantarctic) were deep sea species living at the edges of the Auckland Islands shelf, an area impacted by the largest New Zealand fishery targeting arrow squid. This research points out that management of the New Zealand sea lion must not only consider the direct interactions with the arrow squid fishery, but also the likelihood of food resource competition between fisheries and New Zealand sea lions.
