Mr Oakley investigated bacterial proteins that provide protection from an oxygen-derived free radical.  These enzymes are capable of activity with diverse metal ion cofactors, seemingly defying predictions derived from the Periodic Table of Elements.  Mr Oakley’s studies provide insight into the chemical and electronic processes that occur within the active site of this family of enzymes.
