Read article at Massey Research Online: MRO icon

Robert Semple was one of the most colourful leaders of the twentieth century New Zealand labour movement. In New Zealand history his characterisation is dominated by two public personas: early on as a radical Red Fed and later as a flamboyant Minister of Public Works in the first New Zealand Labour government. This thesis, the first of its kind, examines his life around a number of themes: as an Australian New Zealander; socialist; union organiser; Labour politician and anti-militarist.
