Ms Aberdein’s research confirms and further describes a novel non-neoplastic lymphoproliferative disease in British shorthair kittens with a probable inherited basis. Her results support defects in programmed T-cell death as a factor in disease development, although studies to date have not identified causative genetic abnormalities. The disease in British shorthair kittens has several similarities to the human disease autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS), and it is hoped that future studies will help confirm whether the feline disease has potential to be used as an animal model for ALPS.
