"It's All of These Puzzle Pieces.": The Representation and the Manifest Discourse of Dyslexic Experience

Ms Gibbon’s research explored the everyday experience of dyslexia from a dyslexic perspective within a New Zealand and United Kingdom context. Using art, film, animation and sculpture she explored, the diverse and complex experiences of dyslexia. She developed co-creative enquiry methods to challenge preconceived ideas about dyslexia and the dyslexic experience. This richly textured project explored dyslexic life experiences and world-view, including dyslexics'' expression of knowledge through everyday actions, such as gesture. Her research challenges existing assumptions about dyslexia and expands into new areas including how dyslexics pay attention to the world through their sensory experiences. The artwork she created during the project became an interactive art installation at Mairangi Arts Centre. Her research privileges the knowledge of people with dyslexia and defines the information as coming from the dyslexic community, by changing the term to dysleXia.
