Evaluation of the Good Way Model: A strengths-based integrative model of therapy for young people (with & without an intellectual disability) who have harmful sexual behaviours

Adolescents with harmful sexual behaviour have been identified as perpetrating a significant amount of child sexual abuse, and while treatment programmes have become more available, evaluation studies of these programmes have lagged far behind. Ms Weedon''sresearch focused on evaluating the Good Way model (Ayland & West, 2006), an advanced strengths-based cognitive behavioural approach that meets recommended key programme priorities for the treatment of youth with harmful sexual behaviours. Her research took place within two community-based treatment programmes in New Zealand, and involved young people - with and without an intellectual disability - undergoing treatment for harmful sexual behaviours. Treatment effectiveness was examined within a multiple baseline design framework, and the average treatment duration was seven and a half months. Overall, her findings provided initial evidence of the effectiveness of the Good Way model intervention, indicating that it targeted the problem behaviour appropriately and was well received by participants.
