Dr Lam’s research provided a deeper understanding of the mathematical work of Srinivasa Ramanujan. Largely self-taught, Ramanujan (1887-1920) is acknowledged as one of the world’s greatest mathematical geniuses. He made many spectacular discoveries in a branch of mathematics known as q-series. Although Ramanujan produced more than 3,000 theorems in his three notebooks, he left no explanations and did not publish proofs for many of these. The aim of Lam’s research was to investigate and analyse some of the results recorded in Ramanujan’s second notebook, to provide proofs for these results and to explore their application in the fields of number theory and combinatorics.
