Ms Blakey’s research drew on transdisciplinary ecological perspectives to enhance our understanding of the psychosocial implications of ageing with hearing handicap in the audible world. She proposed a composite model of Ageing with Hearing Handicap. This model explored dyadic partner perspectives of biopsychosocial factors which influenced older New Zealand veterans’ self-reported perceptions of hearing handicap and quality of life. Dyadic perspectives illustrated that increasing levels of hearing handicap exacerbated both partners’ social isolation and emotional agency. Whilst this had a direct impact on the veterans’ mental health, the association with their physical health occurred indirectly through reduced vitality and constricted social participation. These insights highlighted the importance of hearing health agendas across all age groups. Moreover, for further research, the research identified methodological and conceptual challenges inherent in focusing on older dyads’ everyday experiences in coping with the stigma of ageing with an invisible handicap.
