Mr Reweti sought evidence regarding the benefits and cost effectiveness of using low cost PC-based aviation training devices to improve pilot proficiency in performing visual flight rules procedures. He developed five PC-based aviation training devices for use by New Zealand flight training organisations, which included the Royal New Zealand Air Force, the Auckland Helicopter Rescue Trust, and the Massey University School of Aviation. Evidence of the effectiveness of these devices was based on two comparative studies. The first study determined that a PC-based aviation training device was as effective as a civil aviation authority certified flight training device at improving pilot proficiency. The second study determined that the effectiveness of a PC-based aviation training device was not influenced by differences in aviation experience or flight training environment.
