Project Title: Upper and lower body exercise in individuals with Multiple Sclerosis

The vicious cycle of decreased activity in individuals with MS contributes to increased disability, and reduced daily activity, cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, health perception and fatigue indices. Although recommended to exercise for 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, twice weekly, for many this is not possible with traditional exercise techniques. The purpose of this study is to assess the physiological and functional responses to upper body and lower body exercise training in individuals with MS. individuals completed an initial incremental VO2peak test on an arm crank ergometer along with functional reach, timed up and go and 10m walk test and . Following this, individuals completed 24, 30 minute, arm ergometry sessions, over 12 weeks. Results from the upper body exercise training demonstrate that individuals with MS have a physical fitness level below average which corroborates with that of other authors. However upper body ergometry was well tolerated in MS patients. These findings suggest that participating in a twice weekly upper body exercise program can have a positive effect in improving mobility in individuals with Multiple Sclerosis.
