Cyberbullying at Work: Exploring Understandings and Experiences

Workplace cyberbullying poses a threat for organisations and employees alike; yet there remains a paucity of research in this area, limiting our understandings of this workplace hazard. Ms D'Souza's research explored this relatively recent phenomenon from the multiple perspectives of academics, practitioners, and employees, with a particular focus on nursing; a profession with a well-established risk of experiencing traditional forms of bullying. In doing so, she was able to distinguish cyberbullying as a unique construct, while also developing a purpose-specific definition of this phenomenon. Additionally, Ms D'Souza's research identified that workplace cyberbullying often co-occurs with other forms of bullying, can be uniquely perpetrated by clients and patients, and may have a wider scope of harm for those involved. Beyond these contributions, a socio-ecological systems model outlining barriers and enabling factors was developed, as a framework to guide future research on the prevention and intervention of workplace cyberbullying.
